How much does it cost to transport a car in NZ? (2026 guide)

What you'll actually pay to move a car across New Zealand in 2026 — real price ranges by route, what drives cost up, and how to keep it down.

The short answer

Most standard cars move between the main NZ cities for $250–$1,200 door-to-door depending on distance and whether the route crosses Cook Strait.

Short-haul (Auckland–Hamilton, Auckland–Tauranga) sits around $220–$400. Long inter-island runs (Auckland–Queenstown) can hit $1,650. Everything else is somewhere in between.

Real 2026 price ranges

Auckland → Wellington: $500–$700

Auckland → Hamilton: $220–$320

Auckland → Tauranga: $280–$400

Auckland → Christchurch (incl. ferry): $900–$1,200

Wellington → Christchurch (incl. ferry): $500–$700

Christchurch → Queenstown: $500–$700

Auckland → Queenstown (incl. ferry): $1,250–$1,650

What pushes the price up

Size and weight. Utes, large 4WDs, dual-cabs and vans cost more than a hatchback because they take more deck space.

Non-runners. If we need to winch it on, add roughly $80–$150.

Access. Rural pickups add fuel and time. Very tight urban addresses sometimes need us to meet at a nearby car park.

Urgency. Standard runs are cheapest — same-day and weekend often carries a premium.

How to keep it sharp

Be flexible on pickup day. If your car can go on the next available truck instead of a specific date, we can usually shave 10–20% off.

Bundle. Two cars going the same way? Cheaper per car.

FAQs

Is the Cook Strait ferry included in the quoted price?

Yes. When we quote an inter-island move, the Interislander or Bluebridge crossing is included. There are no separate ferry surcharges added later.

Do you charge extra for utes and 4WDs?

Slightly, yes — larger vehicles take more deck space. We factor it in when we quote so the price you see is the final price.

Can you transport a non-running car?

Yes. Non-runners are common — we winch them on with proper equipment. Add roughly $80–$150 depending on how easily we can position it.
